Why a Tablet / Phone is not a PC replacement
I love my Nexus Tablet , and phone . However a Tablet is NOT a good replacement for a desktop computer ! I always hear people saying "I don't need a computer I have a Tablet / Phone", but this kind of thinking only works for people that are NOT power users ! Ask ANY programer , website designer, graphic artist, 3D / 2D animator , photographer, architect, or ANYONE that designs for a living if Tablet's are a GOOD replacement for Computers !!! LOL
Here is something to think about . All Tablet / Phone Apps are built on computers .
If you just look at FaceBook all day , youtube , and play Angry Birds than a Tablet would be perfect for you . If you need power to run high-end software, or play the newest games than get a DeskTop or Laptop computer !
End of story !
What is Linux ?
Linux is what's called a kernel . Think of it like a seed ,
or foundation that you can build anything you want on top of it. Most
things in the world have Linux in them , because companies don't have to
pay licensing fees. Linux is free, and opensource .
Example:
Android , The Nook , Tivo , The Amazon Kindle ,
and Printers are Linux based. PlayStation Network, and most on-line
gaming are powered by Linux servers ! Linux powers almost everything in
the world , but almost no-one knows the name Linux.
There is also Linux operating systems (OS) for computers that can be use in place of Windows called Linux Distributions. I have 2 operating systems on my computer Windows 7 , and Linux Ubuntu OS.
Most Linux and BSD distributions are free to download ! Linux Distrowatch
Some people call it GNU / Linux
GNU is a recursive acronym meaning GNU's Not Unix , and
not to be confused with Apple's XNU that is an acronym for X is Not
Unix. GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) is the idea that software
should be free software. Apple borrowed this ideas from GNU/Linux to
build Apple OS X , and iOS X. Apple opensource
One Linux distribution called MkLinux was the first attempt by Apple to support a free and open source software project. "The work done with the Mach 3.0 kernel in MkLinux was extremely helpful in bringing up NeXTSTEP on the Mac platform, which would later become OS X."
Apple / OS X borrowed ideas from Linux, BSD , UNIX , NeXTSTEP, and other UNIX Like/Based OSes !
This video of Steve Jobs talking about how Mac OS X is a lot like Linux
Great free Art / Photo / music / 3D/ 2D Software

Why is GIMP called G.I.M.P.?
GNU Image Manipulation Program
GIMP is afree alternative to photoshop, and can do most of the same things as photoshop!
GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.
GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted.
GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows and Mac OS X.
Be safe on-line
You can use a sandbox to go to web-sites! Sandboxie is a good free sandbox program.
I love Linux Ubuntu OS with flashback session , cairo-dock , and compiz fusion
! HOWEVER Linux may not fit everyone's needs , because not many
companies make software for it. Linux is free to download , but I only
know of one company that makes computers with Linux already installed "System 76"...
You can run Linux , and Windows on one computer using a "dual boot"...
Android , Chrome book, TiVo, most servers , and most of the world is
Linux based. Mac OSX took their idea's for mkLinux, BSD, and NextStep
OS.
If you run everything like your web browsers in a free copy of sandboxie, or virtual box you will not get a virus in Windows.
Linux distributions also have no active viruses , and it's free, and open... Plus they can run Windows software !
This is my OLD Linux Ubuntu OS Desktop / gnome flashback session / cairo-dock !
